With November 2019 marking the centenary of the end of the First World War, it's important that the conflict is not forgotten by the children of today. And it's important, too, that they're supported in understanding that, in the intervening time, many more millions of men, women and children have suffered as the result of war.

WWI Teaching Ideas

We've developed two simple and moving PowerPoints that can be used to support reflective assemblies, either in class or as a whole school. Simply download the one you want: EYFS/KS1 or KS2/3. And, as a follow-up, you might be interested in our Garden of Remembrance activity.

EYFS/KS1:

(1) If your system supports audio, there is a piece of music that accompanies the presentation - and this is embedded. However, if your system doesn't have this facility, the presentation still works without the music.

(2) You will need to read aloud the text on each slide.

(3) The presentation is not timed - simply advance to the next slide when you feel the children are ready.

(4) We feel that it helps to generate a sense of collective reflection and remembrance if everyone speaks the words on the final slide together. They're very easy to learn!

KS2/KS3:

(1) If your system supports audio, there is a piece of music that accompanies the presentation - and this is embedded. However, if your system doesn't have this facility, the presentation still works without the music.

(2) With Years 3 and 4, you will probably need to read aloud the text on each slide. With older pupils, you might choose to take the same approach, to ask the students to read the text in silence - or to ask a volunteer or volunteers to read it.

(2) The presentation is not timed - simply advance to the next slide when you feel the pupils are ready.

(3) We feel that it helps to generate a sense of collective reflection and remembrance if everyone speaks the words on the final slide together. They're very easy to learn!
