Haydock’s students are justifiably proud of their prowess at sport – but they’ve proved they’re equally adept at the arts!
After working with us last year to challenge their aspirations, a group of Year 10s went on to gain the experiences and skills they needed for the bronze level Arts Award. The emphasis from the outset has been on choice – so whilst they’ve worked individually researching their “Arts Heroes” (ranging from Darcey Bussell to Ashley Banjo – via Eminem!), they’ve also worked together to choose a Masterclass in expressive drawing, a trip to the theatre to review some physical comedy and a process leading to the development of workshops for Year 7 pupils on the social and emotional aspects of learning.
“They’ll be putting the finishing touches to their portfolios over the next few weeks – so watch this space for more This has been a new experience and it will help me in the future - I wish it wasn’t coming to an end … It’s just been really fun and helped me a lot - which is why it is so good because it’s helped me to develop!”
(Year 10 Student)
“It’s been brilliant seeing as creatives pass the decision making to the students – allowing choice and giving the opportunity for discussion and common agreement. I’d like to see the Arts Award develop further in school!”
