The Electric City brings electricity to life through a mix of drama, games and metaphor. It is available as both a stand-alone workshop and as a whole-school Big Science Day, with elements including (according to age) …
- What electricity “is” …
- How we use electricity …
- Different ways of generating electricity - and how some are greener than others …
- The processes involved in gas-powered electricity generation …
- The concept of electric circuits - and some of the components of circuits (and both their purposes and symbols).
The workshops are suitable for up to 60 children at a time and we are always happy to start the day with a whole-school assembly!
On our third visit of the year to Priestmead Primary’s Year 6 classes, pupils took part in The Electric City, exploring what electricity “is”, how it is generated, how not all electricity is as green as we’d like it to be - and creating Human Circuit Boards with their bodies!
"As ever, the kids absolutely loved the mix of drama and scientific facts. The drama brings to life difficult concepts such as electricity (atoms etc.) and is particularly supportive for SEN children. What surprised me the most was how Jackson managed to get the entire electricity curriculum in to a 1.5 hour workshop! Jackson’s knowledge was also remarkable. He allowed the children to ask him questions about anything scientific and was able to answer them all clearly e.g. how do bar codes work. We will be inviting Jackson back next year!"
